Why Does it Matter?
In the Amazon, deforestation has reached 17% in the last 50 years. If it reaches 20%, we’ll face a point of no return, as the ecosystem will be unable to regenerate. It will become a dry savanna. The greater the deforestation, the greater the fires, which release into Earth’s atmosphere the vast quantities of CO2 that are sequestered beneath the Amazon Rainforest.
